Asian Heritage week Assembly

Last week has been very busy for everyone at West Point Grey Academy as we celebrate Asian Heritage week. We had a storytelling assembly where many students and teachers talked about their childhood experiences being Asian. To be honest, I felt very connected to all the speakers who spoke at the assembly as a Chinese Canadian myself.

Painting for the school

I decided to create a painting for my school for Asian heritage week. The idea was to do a painting of the Senior school building of West Point Grey Academy but in a traditional Chinese painting style. Instead of using watercolor, I used traditional painting ink to color this piece. (The building, trees, and fish.) I wanted to merge my culture with my school in this painting, which is kind of the idea of Asian Heritage week and is also why I wanted to make this piece.

Final piece after weeks of work!

I was encouraged by teachers and friends to present this painting to the school for the Asian heritage week assembly as a way to end it. I decided to give a short introduction about the idea behind the piece and why I wanted to create it. This piece will be hanging up in my school next year, which I’m very excited for! Overall, this assembly was a great learning experience and I had the chance to present my artwork.
